Julington Creek to the north and Durbin Creek to the south form the peninsula this slice of wilderness sits on. It's just a few miles from the city of Jacksonville, so you probably won't be totally alone on the trails, but I wouldn't say it's overly crowded. I had plenty of time to seek out wildlife with no one around.
The highlight of my day had to be the young fox squirrels leaving their nest. It's one of the first things I filmed and I considered them quite a treat to see. I looked for them on my way out at the end of the day too. The nest was quiet then. No activity. Would have been nice to see them with more light.
Other animals I came across were mud turtles, toads, gopher tortoise, hawks, woodpeckers, and other small birds.
There were also interesting insects to film. Lots of lubber grasshoppers that I guess were near the end of there life cycle. There was a bunch. Most were dark and hardly moving. Some were mating, which I assume is their final act.
