When people think of what happens when the sunlight hits the skin, they immediately think of Vitamin D production. And it pretty much ends there. But most people would be surprised at all the wonderful compounds that get produced from the life-giving sun hitting the largest organ in the body, the skin.

The video highlights how exposing yourself to the early morning sun helps reset the circadian rhythm. Which means that the more sunlight you get during the day, the more melatonin will be produced at night, allowing for a good night’s sleep. Any parent will tell you how well their children sleep after playing out in the sunshine all day.

Exposing yourself to the sun can help prevent and treat depression since sunlight dramatically increases serotonin levels in the brain. Men who were measured on a very bright day produced 8x more serotonin than those who were measured on a cloudy, dismal day. And serotonin levels are 7x higher in our bodies in summer than in winter, which explains why so many people suffer from seasonal affective disorder (SAD) during the winter months.

And dopamine, the neurotransmitter that is responsible for making us feel bliss, euphoria and give us enhanced motivation and satisfaction is also produced when the sunlight hits the skin.

Even endorphins, which elevate the mood while producing a sense of well being are made when we’re out in the sun.

Nitric oxide is produced by the UVA rays. Nitric oxide is famous for reducing blood pressure since it is a potent vasodilator, which means it opens up the blood vessels causing increased blood flow in the blood vessels, which lowers the blood pressure.

There are less colds and flus in the summer months as the sunlight has potent effects on enhancing immunity, helping our T-cells move to the site of infection to kill invading pathogens. This happens because the skin has about twice the number of T cells in it than the number circulating in the blood.

Light exposure helps MS patients, not just by increasing Vitamin D levels, which prevents relapses, but also by helping to prevent attacks on the myelin sheath by the immune system. Research shows that UV light from the sun inhibits spinal cord inflammation and demyelination by preventing the inflammatory cytokines which provoke these reactions to a minimum.

Many people will tell you their skin diseases, especially eczema, psoriasis and acne clear up in the summer time as they are more exposed to the sunlight.

The video highlights once and for all why we feel, after the end of the long, cold winter, so happy to allow the sun’s rays to penetrate our skin as we feel an immediate increase in our mood and overall health by being out in the sun.
