Meet WILD LETTUCE in Bloom: Native Ancient SALAD who feeds our nerves.

This Native American, hardy annual (sometimes biennial), scientifically named Lactuca canadensis, now stands tall and proud as it waves its yellow, tender flowers in this solstice moment.

Learn to identify, harvest & use wild lettuce in its flowering stage.

Culinary Uses
Basal leaf, and all aerial parts when tender ( stem, tender aerial leaf, flower) can be eaten raw or cooked (soup, saute).

Qualities:
Hearty lettuce flavor with slight bitterness.

Therapeutics:
Mild relaxant, nerve tonic (nervine) feeds / restores and calms the nervous system. Offers mild pain support. Not a strong sedative like other species of wild lettuce. Note this species can be eaten without causing drowsiness.

Harvest
Early spring to mid spring: basal leaves.
Mid spring to mid summer: all aerial parts when tender (stem, tender aerial leaf, flowers).
Late summer thru fall: basal leaves.

Habitat
Look for it in woodland edges and clearings, roadsides, disturbed areas, and fields, in full sun to part shade. Grows in most soil types w/ good drainage & adequate moisture.
Hardiness Zones (USDA): 3–10. Now widely distributed throughout the USA
