June 24th 1981, and a young (20) Steve Cram has his hands full racing against 2 established German 2 lap specialists; Willi Wulbeck wins here in a blanket finish. He ran Coe close (ish) in his 1980 world record 1000m run and would go on to win the first World Championship in Helsinki 2 years later in 1983.
The other German to pip Cram on the line was the then little known Hans Peter Ferner, who would stun everyone the following year in passing Coe in the closing stages of the European final in Athens, after Coe had picked up glandular fever.
Another notable performance here is from 19 year old Chris McGeorge, who promised much, but never quite lived up to his junior form as a senior.
