Movement of vehicles along the Kohima-Dimapur highway partially began on September 5 after multiple landslides ravaged several parts of the National Highway 29 over the past two days. It was after hours of efforts by SDRF officials and several excavators deployed at Phirema to clear the debris that vehicles stuck in the area could move towards Kohima. However, so far only one side of the highway has been opened for vehicular movement as the road is yet to be fully restored.

Meanwhile, the Kohima district administration has issued an advisory allowing the movement of vehicles carrying essential commodities and fuel through an alternative route. As per the advisory, the movement of heavy vehicles through the Jorhat to Kohima via Mokokchung and Merapani to Kohima via Wokha have been allowed.

Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio also visited the landslide-hit areas earlier on Thursday to take stock of the restoration process. He later took to X to share that the concerned authorities have been asked to expedite the restoration of regular vehicular movement and assured restoration of normalcy at the earliest.

The NH-29, a major lifeline to several districts of Nagaland as well as neighbouring Manipur, was hit by multiple landslides and mudslides on September 2 and 3. A landslide at Pherima along the highway claimed the lives of 6 and left several injured on September 3 evening. Along with Pherima, areas such as Tseipama and Pagala Pahar in New Chumoukedima are among the worst affected.
