Traveling to Washington, D.C., Trans-Coast Airways Flight 60 departs Los Angeles. Three of the transcontinental flight's experts have been called to a secret conference at the Pentagon to discuss the "beta bomb," a novel kind of weapon, and the rocket that will carry it. The Douglas DC-6 airplane starts to inexplicably ascend in midair, reaching altitudes of almost 10 miles. Although he is certain that nothing can be done to save the passengers and crew, Operations Manager Hank Norton (John Bryant) at the airline's headquarters makes an effort to stay in touch with the aircraft.
