Pastors aren't "fathers" but the office has some great similarities. We see that in verse 2 and 3ICorinthians4:15
I. A Godly & Genuine pastor has a certain - Jealousy over the Church. V1-6 & 13-15
a. Picture: We see Jealousy in v2. As father would have for a daughter, Paul had much jealousy for the church. His desire was for them to be a spotless member of the bride of Christ. That provides us a beautiful picture. I want only the godliest, manliest, and most loving man for my Princess! A pastor wants the same for the church of which God made him pastor, bishop and elder.
b. Peril: The Peril is an unfaithful fiancé. You see Paul mentions here “another Jesus.” Many people today preach another Jesus which is not Jesus at all. Some preach a Jesus who doesn’t care about the outward appearances, actions, attitudes, acclamations, etc. While others preach a Jesus, Who is not concerned with the inward with only concern for outward actions when the True Jesus is concerned for both: our inward thought and attitude, true conversion and outward actions should go hand in hand.
c. False appearance: v13-15
II. A Godly and Genuine Pastor has a Generosity to the Church. V 7-12
Paul took little or no wages from the church, but provided them the best ministry possible. Yet, somehow this was held against the apostle. Very true today. 50% of Baptist pastors in the State of Ms are bi-vocational. Of the independent Baptist pastors I know personally: 80% are better are bi-vocational. Yet somehow this was being used against Paul. When a pastor is working so that he might have the privilege to pastor. While working, he preaches biblically sound sermons, it ought to turn our stomachs if anyone rises against him, raises questions about his character.
III. Consternation over the Church. V16-33
a. Physical abuse: whippings for preaching
b. Physical dangers: general dangers faced while ministering
c. Psychological difficulty. V28
