In Canada, in 1999, doctors were alarmed by the death of a woman in her fifties who died of cryptococcal meningitis. In the following years, they treated dozens of other patients exhibiting pneumonia-like symptoms: shortness of breath, weight loss, and severe headaches. Following several studies and research, they understand that Vancouver Island is home to a very dangerous fungus. Veterinarians, in turn, reported dozens of cases in the animal population. The fungus does not affect a single species. Genetic analyses led to the conclusion that this new form of cryptococcus was identical to a common form found in Australia. Doctors find themselves with as many new questions as answers.
