BMW has called on the European Commission to look again at its plan to ban the sale of all new petrol or diesel engine vehicles by 2035.

Speaking at the Paris Motor Show, Oliver Zipse, chief executive of the German automotive business, said the ban on the sale of non-zero emission cars, agreed only last year by the states of the European Union, was backing up against a mood among carmakers and consumers that is “trending towards one of pessimism”.

Zipse said: “A correction of the 100 per cent battery electric vehicle target for 2035 as part of a comprehensive CO2-reduction package would afford European manufacturers less reliance on China for batteries.
