Today we’re looking at whatever happened to fatboy slim and the mistake that almost ended his career entirely.

Big Beat as a genre emerged in the 1990’s as an evolution of electronic music, offering more depth and breadth and going heavy on sampling other artists and beats, often sampling obscure audio from old movies and little known acts..

So, how was Big Beat different from other electronic music, you might ask?

Bristol-based DJ John Stapleton explained in an interview with The Age online, an Australian publication how Big Beat was more elaborate because of all the sampling revealing

“I just have to work slightly harder and source things which are either new or haven’t been compiled on other albums before; just try and go a little deeper.”

The genre was named after a club in Brighton, England called Big Beat Boutique. Fatboy Slim even recorded a live album there in 1997, called “On the Floor at the Boutique., which was released the following year. Besides Fatboy Slim, The Chemical Brothers and The Prodigy are two of the other best known Big Beat acts.

It’s not often that an artist can take some of the credit for co-founding a genre of music, but that’s definitely the case with Fatboy Slim. Although he only released 4 studio albums - he has an epic career spanning decades with an extensive catalog of live albums, remixes, singles and collaborations.

Fat Boy Slim is the stage name of English DJ and producer Norman Quentin Cook (born Quentin Leo Cook in 1964 in Kent, England)I He adopted the first name Norman after he joined the group the housemartins. He hated the name Quentin, largely because kids made fun of him and they couldn’t spell it. He was called Q for a period of time and even cookie.

Fatboy Slim returned in 1998 with his breakthrough record, You’ve Come a Long Way, Baby,’ a commentary on his own personal journey as a musician. The album featured several huge singles including Praise You, “The Rockafeller Skank,” both of which peaked at number 36 and 76 on the hot 100 chart. Praise you went to number one in the uk. While rockefeller skank went to number 6. Despite not charting in america, Right Here Right now. And Gangster Trippin were top 5 hits in the uk and charted in other european countries. The Rockafeller Skank was even named single of the year by spin magazine and used by coca cola marketing campginfor the superbowl and i distinctly remember the song being used in an episode of friends the one where ross isn’t liked by his new neighbours. So he holds a party for his neighbours but no one shows up.
