I find a thin backing line tends to cut into the welded loop of my fly line over time, especially when fighting big strong fish that goes to the backing line every time such as sailfish for example. Doubling the backing line helps reduce that and this I find is the easiest way to tie it. I used to do the Bimini twist but find it takes more time to tie and makes no difference in this case.
