Perennial basil is an incredible perennial version of the common sweet basil plant that's leaves are is used to make traditional basil pesto. However, this variety of basil just keeps giving and feeds not only humans, but bees and other pollinators, along with providing much needed pest control.

The single most important thing to remember about perennial basil is that both its scent and taste is very strong - much stronger than its annual, sweet basil cousin. Because of this you need to create balance when making your own perennial basil pesto by including other leafy greens and lots of lemon juice. It's flavour is delicious and is without a doubt going to leave a lasting impression on anyone that tastes it.

Freshly picked perennial basil leaves
Freshly picked Spinach or Swiss Chard (OPTIONAL: Bulks up the pest & makes it less pungent)
Lemon juice
Olive oil
Salt & pepper

Some ways to use perennial basil pesto

There are many, many different ways to use perennial basil pesto in your dishes. They can be used on anything from flatbreads and pasta to delicious toasties. Because this pest recipe is so versatile and you can control the flavours you can dress this pesto up or down depending on what you need to use it for.
