Terrence Malick's The Thin Red Line focusses on a handful of American soldiers as they siege a Japanese held pacific island during WW2. While it doesn't shy away from showing the devastating physical effects of war, the main focus of this is on the mental effect it has on those involved. The experiences these characters go through increasingly bring their faith into question, not necessarily their religious faith, but what they base their world view around. War is destructive in nature, so natural these world views come under strain, some are broken, some are twisted, some are even built back stronger than ever, but what this film shows above all else - is how war tests people's faith.
