The redoubtable Bunny Williams, four decades in, continues to turn out both books and houses with enviable regularity. In this, her 6th such effort - not to be confused with An Affair with a House, which covers her own (notably handsome) home - she analyses 15 of her favourite decorative projects, ranging from the deceptively simple to the grandiose, with a chapter devoted to each.

A cursory inspection might tend to suggest the book is a prime example of self-promotion, pitched solely at the well-heeled. Not so. A deeper look reveals the art and science, as much as the thought processes, behind each undertaking, the latter distinctive, no two alike, and all scaleable-downable.

To the lay reader, such a tome may appear daunting - it is, after all, 300 pages long - but that would belie its usefulness. Replete with tips and caveats (her bold-face inserts are particularly a propos), this is not only an easy, but graceful read; and if, as your correspondent so often retorts to friends baffled by an entire wall of such books, a tome of this type yields a single, original idea to act on, it pays for the entire purchase.
