Miyamoto Musashi was a Japanese swordsman, philosopher, strategist and writer. Known simply as ‘Musashi’, he fought with a sword in each hand and was undefeated in 61 duels. He was the founder of the Niten Ichiryū and authored both The Book of Five Rings and Dokkōdō (The Path of Aloneness).

Musashi won his first duel at age 13, taking a hostile samurai off his feet with a jiu jitsu throw before swiftly killing him, and in the years that followed he would best many challengers. However his status as a legend would be cemented in his famous duel with Sasaki Kojirō, known as the ‘Demon of the Western Provinces’. Kojirō wielded a greatsword so large it was referred to jokingly as a laundry pole and was the master of a two stroke technique called the ‘tsubame gaeshi’.

Having agreed to fight each other, a duel was planned on the beaches of the small island of Ganryūjima at the hour of the Dragon (approximately 8am). Despite officials banning spectators, the entire island was quickly filled with onlookers. Kojirō arrived at the appointed time but was then left to wait for hours as Musashi never showed. As he sat around all day enduring the perceived affront to his honor, the heat and the crowds of spectators, Kojirō gradually became more enraged and less focused. Sometime in the mid afternoon, Musashi arrived leisurely in a small fishing boat with no fanfare. Rather than carrying his signature two swords, he carried only a rough wooden sword he had carved from an oar on the ride over, a detail which further enraged his opponent. Musashi approached and began circling with Kojirō, who promptly yelled and leapt forward in his signature attack. Musashi surged forward to meet him and both men’s strikes flashed swiftly. The tip of Kojirō’s giant blade came so close that it cut off Musashi’s headband. The strike of Musashi’s wooden blade, on the other hand, landed flush, crushing Kojirō’s skull.

Miyamoto Musashi would die at age 62 while holding his sword, having retired to a cave to live as a hermit.
