Indian Botanical Garden (Kolkata) : In this video I am going to discuss about the history of Indian Botanical Garden situated at shibpur Howrah. Botanical Garden is the only place where you can get a atmosphere of rainforest in Kolkata. This historical garden spread over 270 acres and there are more than 12000 species of plants in this garden. Indian botanical garden was established by Colonel Robert Kyd who himself was a officer of East India company in the year of 1787 beside the bank of Hooghly River. The primary moto was to cultivate some plants which have high commercial value in international market although British officers planted some medicine plants which they brought to England to prepare medicine. Dr, William Roxburgh was in charge of this garden from 1793-1813 who made this garden into a dense forest planting various plants collecting around the world, cause he was a botanist and he was called the father of Indian botany. You can see 21 species of birds in this garden although some mammals like mongoose and squirrels. The main attraction of this garden is The Great Banyan Tree which is more than 270 years old and spread over 486 meters, in the year of 1985 this tree enlisted its name in Guinness Book of world as the greatest Banyan tree in the world. Every year thousand of people come across the world to visit this place because of its natural beauty. I think This is a perfect destination for nature lovers for one day tour near Kolkata.
