After a long winter, springtime has finally arrived here in the Colorado Rockies. Today, the weather is warm. The sky is clear and a deep blue.

I'm hiking to Button Rock Mountain in the Roosevelt National Forest. At 8,450 ft, there's still some snow up here but it's passable. Whoah! I nearly wiped out there.

I scramble up the last boulders to the Button Rock summit. I enjoy the view towards Rocky Mountain National Park, but I don't linger long here because I know there's even better views ahead on this 8 mile hike.

I'm not in any kind of hurry today. I brought my hammock and found a sunny spot in the forest to set it up. Hammocking is one of my favorite ways to relax.

There's as many reasons to hike as there are hikes in this world. Today I'm here for the solitude and maybe to get some thinking done.

After my little siesta, I pack up the hammock and continue along to the highlight of this hike. A spur trail extends to a large rocky outcropping on the edge of Button Rock Mountain.

We get more magnificent views of the high peaks, including Longs Peak. It's been a snowy winter and I expect it will be well into July before I can hike in the alpine areas above 13,000 feet.

I walk along the rocky ledge, always careful with my step in this heavy wind. It's a long way down from here. There's clear views to the south and east. We can see the Great Plains in the distance.

Thanks for joining me on this hike to Button Rock Mountain. I'll see you next time.
