The description of the origin of Pushkar is found in the Padmapurana . It is said that Lord Brahma came here and performed a yagya. Among the major pilgrimage centers of Hindus, Pushkar is the only place where the temple of Brahmaji is established. Apart from the temple of Brahma ji, there are temples of Goddess Gayatri, Goddess Savitri, Shri Badrinarayan ji, Varah ji and Shiva ji Atmeshwar, but they are modern. The ancient temples here were destroyed by Mughal dictator Aurangzeb. On the banks of the Pushkar Lake, pucca ghats have been built at various places, which have been built by the rich people of the princely states of Rajputana.

Pushkar is also mentioned in the Ramayana . In canto 62 verse 28 Vishwamitrospi Dharmatma Bhuyastepe Mahatapa. Pushkareshu Narshrestha Dashvarshatani Ch. Valmiki Ramayana Balkand canto 62 verse 28 talks about doing penance at Vishwamitra 's place. According to Sarg 63 Shlok 15, Menaka had come here to bathe in the holy water.

In the Sanchi stupa inscriptions, whose time is B.C. In the 2nd century AD, there are descriptions of donations from many Buddhist monks who resided in Pushkar. In the inscription of Pandulen cave, which is believed to be of AD 125, the name of Ushamadavatt appears. He was the son-in-law of the famous king Nahapana and came to Pushkar and donated 3000 cows and a village.

It is known from these writings that from the beginning of AD or before that, Pushkar was famous for pilgrimage. Many ancient articles have also been found in Pushkar itself, in which the oldest is believed to be around 925 AD. This article was also received from Pushkar and its time is believed to be around 1010 AD.
