In this comparison we put the Kia Sportage HEV ‘plug-less’ hybrid up against the newly introduced BYD Sealion 6 PHEV ‘plug-in’ hybrid, to see which is more efficient, which has better tech, which is easier to live with and finally, which one is the better overall vehicle.

As hybrids provide a stepping stone between traditional combustion engine vehicles and EVs, there are still choices to be made over which type of hybrid works best for you, and the country of origin is almost as important too. In the past the Korean (Kia) car would have beaten the Chinese (BYD) car convincingly. But BYD has shown us that Chinese cars can be smartly executed and word of mouth is becoming a big factor for cars built in China.

However, for a lot of buyers off-street parking and/or charging facilities are not an option, which would mean a plug-less hybrid will be the far more sensible choice. On the other hand, a plug-in hybrid offers more versatility and generally lower running costs. Senior Editor Feann Torr put both SUVs through their paces and crowned one of them the winner.
