A Little History

The Ford Fairlane Thunderbolt is a limited production, factory experimental, drag racing version of the Ford Fairlane produced during the 1964 model year only. A total of 100 units were produced; forty-nine 4-speeds and fifty-one automatics, enough to secure the 1964 NHRA Super Stock championship for Ford.

Powered by a V8 underrated at 425 horsepower (actual power may be close to 600 horses), the Thunderbolt was notably lighter than the Fairlane. The car helped Ford win the NHRA Super Stock championship in 1964. Because many cars were crashed at the drag strip, only 60 of the 100 units built are still known to exist.

Thunderbolt Fairlane 500s as K-code, high-performance 289ci, 4-speed cars. They arrived, less the engine and transmission.

By ordering the K-code engine, the car was shipped with larger brakes and the Ford 9-inch differential. The chassis was reinforced and modified to accommodate a 427ci 8-cylinder high-riser FE engine with two 4-barrel carburetors.

The original steel hood and front quarter-panels were replaced with fiberglass, and a teardrop hood was installed. Weight-saving measures included the elimination of many items. What remained inside the car was a single driver’s sun visor, windshield wiper, seat belt and lightweight Bostrum Thinline racing seats.

The Thunderbolts were also delivered with drag racing slicks as standard equipment. This particular example was delivered to Max Larson Ford in Coldwater, MI, on December 26, 1963, and resold on April 21, 1964, to Jack Mefford Ford in Springfield, OH, where it was campaigned throughout the Ohio Valley. Originally produced with an automatic transmission, this car was quickly converted to a Ford Toploader 4-speed manual transmission.

In the heyday of the muscle car, very few of the racing engines coming out of the Motor City rivaled Ford’s 427 CID SOHC V8 engine, otherwise known as the “Cammer.” When equipped with dual four-barrel carburetors, the legendary powerhouse generated a prodigious 657 horsepower. Even when a single four-barrel carburetor was employed, the engine could still generate 616 horsepower. Therefore, it should come as no surprise that this big, powerful engine often appears on lists of the top ten engines of all time

The development of the Cammer was inspired by Richard Petty’s stunning upset in the 1964 Daytona 500 Opens a new window in a Plymouth powered by Chrysler’s 426 Hemi. The sudden emergence of the Hemi engine shook things up in the Ford racing community. Ford’s 427 Hi-riser engine had once reigned supreme, winning race after race before the Petty upset.

Concept to Reality in Just 3 Months

Ford was quick to respond to the new threat posed by Chrysler’s powerful Hemi power plant. Ford’s modification of the Hi-riser engine proceeded from the drawing board to reality in less than three months.
