Ruby Lal's recent work, Vagabond Princess: The Great Adventures of Gulbadan, is the first ever biography of Princess Gulbadan, the daughter of the founder of the Mughal Empire, Emperor Babur. An intimate exploration of gender, power and loyalty, the narrative takes us through the life of a charismatic adventurer and the multicultural society she lived in. With her work, Lal breathes new life into an extraordinary Mughal figure, and establishes her unique place in a history that has long been dominated by men's actions and words.

Ruby Lal, an award-winning historian and South Asian history professor at Emory University, is renowned for restoring erased female figures from the Mughal Empire. Her latest book, Vagabond Princess: The Great Adventures of Gulbadan, has received acclaim from many including the BBC and The Hindu. Her previous work, Empress: The Astonishing Reign of Nur Jahan, was a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize. Lal's upcoming book, Tiger-Slayer, is an illustrated remix of Empress for young adults. She has received fellowships from institutions like the Swedish Collegium for Advanced Studies and the Jackman Humanities Institute.

William Dalrymple is the author of the Wolfson Prize-winning White Mughals, Duff Cooper Prize-winning The Last Mughal, and the Hemingway and Kapuscinski Prize-winning Return of a King. His book, The Anarchy, was shortlisted for the Duke of Wellington medal, the Tata Book of the Year, and the Historical Writers Association Award, and won the 2020 Arthur Ross Medal from the US Council on Foreign Relations. Dalrymple has held visiting lectureships at Princeton, Brown, and Oxford, where he is currently a Visiting Fellow at All Souls. He was presented with the President’s Medal by the British Academy and was named one of the world’s top 50 thinkers for 2020 by Prospect Magazine. He is a founder and co-director of the Jaipur Literature Festival.
