Synthetic Intelligence Forum is excited to convene a session about "Sequential Decision Analytics" with Warren Powell, PhD (Professor Emeritus of Operations Research and Financial Engineering, Princeton University).

Topic: Discover the complex world of sequential decision-making and learn how to make the best decisions under uncertainty in this insightful talk by Professor Powell. Sequential decision analytics is crucial for real-world decision-making, where successive choices must be made before new information arrives, often under unpredictable conditions.
Professor Powell breaks down the complexities of sequential decision problems, which span across at least fifteen distinct fields and employ a variety of notational systems and solution approaches. He calls this the “jungle of stochastic optimization,” a tangled web of methods and applications. However, instead of focusing on isolated methods, sequential decision analytics unites a broad array of techniques to address this overarching problem class.
This talk will equip you with essential insights into sequential decision-making, stochastic optimization, and decision analytics—key areas that shape industries such as finance, logistics, AI, and operations research. This talk will help you to gain a comprehensive understanding of how to optimize decisions in uncertain environments.

Biography: Professor Warren Powell, Professor Emeritus at Princeton University, has had a distinguished career spanning over four decades in the field of Operations Research and Financial Engineering. Joining the Princeton faculty in 1981, he is recognized for his groundbreaking work in computational stochastic optimization and sequential decision-making.
In 1990, he founded the CASTLE Laboratory at Princeton, initially focused on applying advanced optimization techniques to transportation and logistics. In 2011, he expanded his research into energy systems with the creation of the Princeton laboratory for ENergy Systems Analysis (PENSA). This later evolved into the broader CASTLE Labs, where his team tackles a wide array of problems in stochastic optimization and machine learning.
Professor Powell is also a prolific author. His books include Reinforcement Learning and Stochastic Optimization: A Unified Framework for Sequential Decisions and Approximate Dynamic Programming: Solving the Curses of Dimensionality. He also co-authored Optimal Learning with Ilya Ryzhov and co-edited the influential book Learning and Approximate Dynamic Programming: Scaling Up to the Real World.
His work has transformed fields like energy, transportation, and logistics, and his contributions continue to influence researchers, professionals, and academics working with complex decision-making systems.
