Fanny Crosby was inspired to write this song while she and her fellow missionaries were ministering to inmates in a prison.

One cell at a time, Fanny shared the Gospel and sang praise songs. However, due to limited visiting hours, not all cells could be reached. Fanny had to end her service, and the guards directed them towards the exit.

But knowing many still hadn't been served, Fanny reluctantly hurried to continue. Suddenly, from an unvisited cell, a heartbreaking voice cried out, “Please, don’t leave me.”

In her letters, Fanny Crosby wrote that as she composed this hymn, the sorrowful cry from that cell echoed in her mind, much like the voice of the two blind men shouting for Jesus (Matthew 20:29-31).

Remembering the immense love of Jesus, who listens to those who seek Him, she was moved to create this hymn.

This praise universally places us in the position of those who are earnestly asking God to bless us. We are like beggars before Jesus, who abundantly offers the grace of forgiveness.

Have you accepted Jesus into your heart?
