On July 25th, a large magnitude 5.6 earthquake struck adjacent to the Chiles Cerro Negro volcano on the border of Ecuador & Colombia. This quake was subsequently followed by record levels of long period earthquakes which typically occur due to the movement of magma or hydrothermal fluids. Alongside ground uplift of more than 10 centimeters a year, this made clear that magma truly is on the move at depth. As a result, it was recommended that people stay away from hot springs adjacent to the volcano. These represent some of the most likely sites for an eruption to begin if one was to occur.
