Nell’avviare il restauro del monumentale arazzo raffaellesco l’«Adorazione dei Magi» (Scuola Nuova), i Musei Vaticani hanno condotto a porte chiuse una spettacolare operazione di lavaggio in una vasca appositamente realizzata per contenere il prezioso «panno» dalle dimensioni eccezionali: 568 cm di altezza per 958 cm di larghezza. L’immersione nell’acqua ha reso ancora più evidente la raffinatezza della tecnica e la quantità di fili dorati e argentati, già notata a suo tempo nel 1531 quando la serie arrivò a Roma e fu stimata più ricca di oro e di seta degli arazzi degli «Atti degli Apostoli» per la Cappella Sistina.
L’opera sarà interessata da un meticoloso intervento conservativo che richiederà ben sette anni, finanziato dai capitoli del Michigan e di New York dei Patrons of the Arts in the Vatican Museums.

As the restoration of Raphael's monumental tapestry, the “Adoration of the Magi” (New School) commenced, the Vatican Museums conducted a spectacular washing operation behind closed doors in a tub specially made to contain the precious “cloth” of exceptional dimensions: 568 cm high by 958 cm wide. The immersion in water made even more evident the refinement of the technique and the quantity of gold and silver threads, already noted in 1531 when the series arrived in Rome and was estimated to be richer in gold and silk than the tapestries of the “Acts of the Apostles” for the Sistine Chapel.
The meticulous conservative intervention will last seven years and is supported by the Michigan and New York Chapters of the Patrons of the Arts in the Vatican Museums.
