This comprehensive guide will teach you how to capture high-quality dental images with a Canon DSLR camera. Dental assistants will get step-by-step instructions on taking full-face, smile, and retracted views for orthodontic treatment planning and progress documentation. We’ll explain the difference between manual and automatic settings and why manual mode ensures better results. This video provides everything you need to perfect your dental photography skills, from positioning the patient to using retractors for clear anterior views.

Full Face
Framed horizontally, full-face smiling photographs show the top of the head to just below the chin. With the patient standing up straight, the camera should be directly in front of the patient. Place the focus on the nose. A solid and non-distracting background provides contrast between the patient and the background.

Centered, right, and left smile
Because of the closer picture, the smiling view requires the camera to be in macro mode. As the camera focuses on the central incisors, the corners of the mouth and the patient’s full natural smile are also included.

If possible, avoid the nose and chin in the frame. Encourage patients to give exaggerated smiles and show as many teeth as possible. Again, the patient can be standing, with the camera directly in front and at the same level as the patient. The focal points of the right and left photographs are the lateral incisors. The view includes the upper and lower lips, with equal amounts of skin above and below the lips. Repeat for the right and left sides.

Centered, right, and left anterior retracted
Seat the patients in the dental chair. The incisal edges become visible, and the upper and lower teeth are slightly parted. Place the clear retractors with the lips retracted outward and away from the teeth.

Situating the camera at the same level as the patient, the frame of this photograph includes the upper and lower lips, with equal amounts of skin above and below the lips. Repeat for the right and left sides.
