The era of the 99’ers is considered as the first golden age of the United States Women's Soccer (USWNT).

The team's roster is made up of world-famous players like Mia Hamm, Brandi Chastain, Kristinne Lilly and Michelle Akers. Here is the list of US players selected for the 1991 World Cup:

The USWNT Squad:

Briana Scurry, Tracy Noonan, Saskia Webber, Christie Pearce, Brandi Chastain, Sara Whalen, Joy Fawcett, Kate Sobrero, Tiffany Roberts, Lorrie Fair, Julie Foudy, Kristine Lilly, Tisha Venturini, Michelle Akers, Shannon MacMillan, Mia Hamm, Cindy Parlow, Danielle Fotopoulos, Carla Overbeck, Tiffeny Milbrett

In the group matches, the United States successively defeated Denmark, Nigeria and North Korea. In the quarterfinals, Mia Hamm's teammates beat Germany and then Brazil in the semi-final. The final was finally won by the Americans on penalty shootout against China.

Brandi Chastain scored the winning shot. As a celebration, the American threw off her jersey, revealing her bra. This scene is one of the most iconic in the history of women's soccer.
