What’s up, Snow Pros! We’re back with Episode 6: and we’re talking snowboarding
Snowboarders, the “trouble ones,” the baggy-clothes-wearing snow sliders of the surfing and skateboard world. The cool ones. The rad friends. The people who want to experience the thrill a mountain can offer just like anyone else.
Snowboarding has a deep history but it started gaining popularity in the 80s. 1985 is when Breckenridge Ski Resort hired its first snowboard instructor – David Alden. Until then, there weren’t many people attempting to ski on one board rather than two. But once that was learned, a whole new style of sliding on snow came out. “Freestyle” is the word that came from snowboarding because of their willingness and drive to explore a mountain and play with gravity a bit. Jumping off halfpipes, sliding down boxes. AASI – the American Association of Snowboard Instructors was formed in 1997 and gave snowboarders equal footing in the industry. Validating the sport and allowing for a new wave of members to join the newly rebranded snowsports organization – PSIA-AASI.
Stay tuned for next week when we celebrate the influential women in the industry.
