Myeloproliferative neoplasms are chronic disorders that cause an excessive production of blood cells in the body. MPNs are caused by special cell mutations, such as JAK2, MPL, CALR, and BCR-ABL, that affects blood cell formation. These are more often than not mutations that are not passed on from one generation to the next, and rather are acquired over time. Occasionally, there are familiar dispositions to developing an MPN. This means a gene inherited from your parents could predispose you to an MPN like mutation, however, you do not inherit the actual mutation, only the risk. Most patients do not have these inherited genes and develop MPNs by chance.
