March 4th would've been the birthday of the charity fundraiser, cricketer, actor, writer and former president of RSO Records, David English CBE. He founded the Bunbury Cricket Club, through which he raised £14m for charity. In a varied career, he was a journalist at the Daily Mail, worked for Decca Records and later became President of RSO Records, signing artists including the Bee Gees and Eric Clapton. He also had a career in acting, appearing in the films A Bridge Too Far and Lisztomania. He wrote a series of children's books called Bunbury Tails and a spin off animated series called The Bunbury Tails.
In this excerpt he tells me about his audition for a major movie, how the Bee Gees wrote one of their biggest hits and how Gary Lineker scored a cricket century and a football hat trick on the same day.
