로버트 아담스(Robert Adams)는 어릴 적부터 신비 체험을 했다. 침대 발치에 하얀 머리와 수염을 한 노인이 때때로 찾아와 알아들을 수 없는 말로 이야기하곤 했다. 싯디(siddhi, 초능력)도 찾아왔다. 14세 때 기말시험을 치르던 그는 교실 전체가 태양보다 천 배나 더 밝은 빛으로 가득 차는 경험을 했다. 자신은 육신이 아니라 의식의 빛이라는 것을 깨달으면서 개인적 자아가 절대 순수의 축복과 환희에 녹아드는 체험이었다.
아담스는 라마나 마하리쉬가 육신을 버리기 4년 전인 1946년 인도 남부 티루반나말라이에 있는 마하리쉬의 아쉬람으로 찾아갔다. 그 때 아담스의 나이는 18세였다. 어릴 때부터 비전에서 본 하얀 머리와 수염의 구루를 만난 것이다. 아루나찰라 산을 산책하고 있던 마하리쉬 앞으로 간 아담스는 입고 있던 옷을 모두 벗어던지고 알몸이 된 채 그 앞에 엎드렸다고 한다.
1950년 마하리쉬가 육신을 벗을 때까지 아담스는 마하리쉬 곁에 머물렀다. 마하리쉬 사후 로버트 아담스는 17년 동안 인도 전역을 떠돌며 수많은 깨달은 자와 함께 머물렀다. 1960년대 말 미국으로 돌아온 아담스는 1997년 이 세상을 뜰 때까지 소수의 사람들에게 담화 형태로 메시지를 전했다.
