Formerly, Regensburg was not yet the easternmost tip of Bavaria, but rather the center. Monastery next to monastery attracted artists and scholars, merchants distributed luxury goods throughout Europe, and built their family towers reaching into the sky. And the stone bridge swung over the Danube - as the only fortified crossing between Ulm and Vienna. Emperors passed through the city gates to convene imperial diets. But eventually, trade along the Danube bypassed Regensburg. Just as Regensburg had become rich and then poor with trade, it also rose and fell with the power dynamics of the Third Reich. A tumultuous history that is still walkable in medieval vaults, adorns baroque facades, and is presented in the old Reichstag building.
