Mt. Ryogo is located almost in the center of the Kunisaki Peninsula, and Ryogo-ji Temple is located halfway up Mt. Ryogo.
It is the Nakayama Main Temple in Rokugo Manzan, meaning it is the main training center for mountain asceticism, and has been in charge of the entire mountain as the Soji-in temple of Rokugo Manzan since the Edo period.
The torii gate leading to the "inner sanctuary" - a sign of syncretism between Shinto and Buddhism
There is a torii gate leading to the inner sanctuary of Ryogo-ji Temple.
You might wonder, "A torii gate at a temple?"
The group of temples that spread across the Kunisaki Peninsula, including Ryogo-ji Temple, was founded by Ninmon Bosatsu, an incarnation of Hachiman of Usa Jingu Shrine,
and later, as the mountain Buddhism of "Rokugo Manzan" developed,
a syncretistic culture of Shinto-Buddhism in which "gods are Buddhas" and "Buddhas are gods" was born,
which is why temples have torii gates like this.
We pray to the gods in nature for a good harvest, and ask Buddhism, which teaches the way of Buddha, about the original way humans should live.
There is a torii gate at the entrance to the inner sanctuary as a proof of the fusion of gods and Buddha.
When I stand in front of this torii gate, I feel the depth of the Japanese people's generosity, who have accepted different faiths.
