Even in mains operation with 220V, most 1541 floppies had the symptom of strong heat development. The pan-European harmonisation of the mains voltage to 230V in 1987 exacerbated this problem.
The conversion of the transformer from 220V to 240V operating voltage provides some cooling for the electronics.
