So you backpack. You've got all the gear for 3 seasons, but when winter comes around you shove the pack into the closet and forget about it until the spring. In Idaho, our winter season is pretty long. We have snow from November-June. So how do you turn backpacking into a 4 season past time? You can only ski so much in the winter, how do you get outside and stay outside, all year long?

It's actually way more simple than you probably think. All you have to do to enjoy winter backpacking, is stay warm. Think about it. That's really it. If I promised you you'd stay warm camping in January my guess is you'd probably go.

So let's explore how to stay warm starting with your sleep system. Staying warm during the coldest hours of your adventure is key. If you can conquer the coldest hours, it's smooth sailing from there. I like to think of your winter sleep system in the same way I do clothing. Like a layer system. Here is my layered sleep system for snowy cold weather camping.
