In the wake of the fall of France, the tiny Principality of Monaco, once under the protection of the defeated former, has become surrounded on all sides by hostile foreign powers. The fate of the microstate now lies in the hands of the Axis Powers of Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy, both of whom had very different pictures of Monaco’s future. Behind the wealthy and luxurious micronation we know today, holds one of the least known stories of the Second World War: A story of tragedy, survival and in the end, triumph for the Principality of Monaco.
