‘님’에서 북쪽으로 약 25킬로미터, ‘아비뇽’에서 서쪽으로 약 40킬로미터 지점에 위치한 ‘위제스’(Uzès)는 프랑스 남부 ‘옥시타니’(Occitanie) 지방의 작은 중세마을이다. 이런 작은 마을에 40채의 건물이 문화재로 지정된 예술과 역사의 흔적이 그대로 남아있는 곳이다.

이 마을의 ‘외르’(Eure) 호수에서부터 인구가 급증하는 신도시 ‘님’(Nîmes)으로 물을 공급하기 위하여 기원후 38년 공사를 시작하여 15년만에 완성한 ‘퐁 뒤 가르’(Pont du Gard)가 세워지기 이전인 기원전 1세기에 ‘위제스’(Uzès) 도시가 형성된다. 중세 요새의 모습을 그대로 간직한 꾸불꾸불한 골목과 좁고 자갈이 깔린 보행자 거리는 중세, 르네상스, 18세기까지의 모습을 보여준다.

위제스 공작의 성 Duché D’Uzès
1565년 ‘샤를 9세’(Charles IX)에 시절, 귀족들의 서열을 재정비하면서 ‘위제스’의 영주가 프랑스 최초로 공작(Duc) 타이틀을 받았다는 자부심이 대단한 가문의 성이다. 프랑스 선왕이 사망한 것을 알리고 새로운 왕의 등극을 알리는 ‘Le roi est mort, vive le roi !‘라고 외치는 역할이 대대로 이 가문에 세습되어 왔다.

성녀 테오도라 대성당 Cathédrale Saint-Théodorit
성녀 테오도라에게 봉헌하기 위해 지은 위제스 대성당은 로마인들이 세웠던 신전 위에 1090년에 지어진 것으로, ‘클뤼니’(Cluny) 수도회의 영향을 받아 초기 로마네스크 양식으로 건설된다.
프로방스 지방을 찬탈하기위해 교황의 묵인아래 치러진 ‘알비 십자군’(Croisade des Albigeois) 동안이던 1177년 일부가 파괴된 것을 재건축하였다. 또한 구교와 개신교의 종교전쟁 동안에 종탑을 제외하고 완전 파괴된 것을 1642-1663년에 재건한다. 신 로마네스크 양식의 정면은 1873년 완성한 모습이다.
프랑스 대혁명 당시, 내부의 가구들은 대부분 분실되었지만 1685년에 제작한 파이프 오르간은 원형이다.

Uzès, located about 25 kilometers north of Nîmes and about 40 kilometers west of Avignon, is a small medieval village in the Occitanie region of southern France. In this small village, 40 buildings have been designated as cultural heritage sites, and traces of art and history remain intact.

The city of Uzès was formed in the 1st century BC, before the Pont du Gard, which began construction in 38 AD and was completed in 15 years to supply water from Lake Eure to the rapidly growing new city of Nîmes. The winding alleys and narrow, cobbled pedestrian streets, which retain the appearance of a medieval fortress, show the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, and the 18th century.

Duché D’Uzès, the castle of the Duke of Uzès
This castle is a proud family castle, as the Lord of Uzès was the first in France to receive the title of Duke during the reorganization of the nobility during the reign of Charles IX in 1565. The role of announcing the death of the previous king of France and the enthronement of the new king by shouting “Le roi est mort, vive le roi!” has been passed down to this family for generations.

Cathédrale Saint-Théodorit
The Uzès Cathedral, built in 1090 to consecrate to Saint Theodore, was built on top of a temple built by the Romans, and was built in the early Romanesque style under the influence of the Cluny monastery. It was rebuilt after being partially destroyed in 1177 during the Albigensian Crusade, which was carried out with the Pope's consent to usurp Provence. It was also rebuilt between 1642 and 1663 after being completely destroyed during the religious wars between Catholics and Protestants, except for the bell tower. The neo-Romanesque façade was completed in 1873. Most of the furniture inside was lost during the French Revolution, but the pipe organ built in 1685 is the original.
