Last week, temperatures were in the 90's with high humidity here in central Illinois. Such temperatures are the standard every summer, making air conditioning service common and expected. A student brought a family member's car into class due to an inoperative air conditioning system. They were ready to replace the compressor on the advice and diagnosis of a local repair shop. The shop had identified that the compressor clutch was not engaging and ultimately recommended its replacement to the cost of around $1,000 parts & labor. This is were the student got involved, purchasing a $600 compressor from a local parts store and asking for help to complete the repair.

The fortunate outcome was a great opportunity to walk through diagnosis of an inoperative compressor clutch. Air conditioning work is a great blend of mechanical and electrical systems working together. Efficient diagnosis requires an understanding of both sides to that equation. In this video, I discuss the process we went through to diagnose and fix the concern. It was a great process to work through with the student and discuss what value each test brought in the process.
