Salzburg, Austria is close to the border of Germany and offers up great views of the Eastern Alps from many spots around the city. Traveling from Salzburg to Munich by car or train takes less than two hours. The Salzach river divides the town and there are bridges for traffic and pedestrians to travel between the newer part of town and the UNESCO listed Alstadt
which features wonderful Baroque architecture.
The Romans invaded this area in 15 BC and formed a city called Juvavum
which became one of the most important cities of this region. When the Roman province collapsed in 488, part of the population remained and the city saw a bit of a decline. Rupert of Salzburg arrived in 696 and is credited with the city's rebirth. The city's German name Salzburg (Salt-Castle) derives from the barges carrying salt on the river Salzach, which were subject to a toll in the 8th century as was customary for many communities and cities
on European rivers.
A few of the many notable citizens of Salzburg include:
Rupert of Salzburg (Bishop of Worms 660-710) Credited with revitalizing a former Roman city (Juvavum) by building Saint Peter's Abbey.
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) Child prodigy credited with 800 works in a very short life-span.
The Trapp Family (Singing and Performing family until 1957) The "Sound
of Music" is loosely based on this family.
Christian Doppler (1803-1853) Discovered the Doppler effect.
Ferdinand Habsburg (1997- ) Racing driver and heir apparent to the headship of the house of Habsburg-Lorraine.
