I’ve been singing John Prine’s song, “Paradise,” for many years, but tonight when I heard he passed away, I knew I had to do it on camera, and I knew I needed to do it a little differently than usual. More sparse, more stark, more time to reflect.

It turns out that this song is a true story, and apparently all of the places and names mentioned in it are real. (Except I accidentally turned the abandoned, old prison into a coal mine.) Words, music, and reality by John Prine, October 10, 1946-April 7, 2020, RIP.

Performed by Sam Edelston. In the spirit of the song, I played this on a dulcimer with no extra frets, tuned DAD. The dulcimer was built by George Haggerty of Vermont.

The Appalachian dulcimer, or mountain dulcimer, is Kentucky’s official state musical instrument. Dulcimers are best known for traditional and folk music, but they’re wonderful for many other kinds of music, as well. I make videos of modern songs like this (and sometimes considerably more “out there” than this) to encourage people to play the dulcimer in diverse, contemporary styles.
