The waters off North Carolina played an important role in both WWI and WWII. With its close proximity to shipping lanes and ideal underwater bathymetry for surprise attacks and quick escapes, North Carolina waters became a target for German u-boats during world war one. Janie Knutson, a graduate student in the program in Maritime Studies at East Carolina University, has been researching WWI U-boats off our coast as part of her master's thesis research. This video was produced in partnership with Current TV and ECU's Program in Maritime Studies.
