TW: mentions of suicide and self-harm.

David wanted to take part in #Homewards Homelessness: Reframed exhibition at Saatchi Gallery to show that homelessness doesn’t just take one form and has created a sculpture of a house made inspired by the car he used to live in – the process of which has been both triggering and uplifting.

David is a former soldier, who had to leave the military because of his sexuality (before the military ban on homosexuality was lifted in 2000). The trauma of which left him struggling to cope. In this powerful video, David shares how his experiences led him to experience homelessness and move into his car. After the ordeal of living in his car for a number of months, and following a number of suicide attempts, he was finally helped by a passer-by who put him in touch with an ex-veteran’ charity. He believes that everyone can make art and art saved his life.
