In this conversation, the two MLE Retreat facilitators, Dr Marieke van Vugt and Dr Martijn van Beek, offer us a window on the history and raison d’être of the MLE Retreat, an intimate in-person gathering taking place just before the European Summer Research Institute. Inspired by Francisco Varela’s model of the ‘scholar-practitioner’, the MLE Retreat is unique in that it gathers together academics, researchers, and other professionals who are seeking to integrate their contemplative practices and professional lives more fully, cultivating a “sense for the whole” (David Bohm). Rather than emphasising traditional forms of teaching, these retreats draw upon the wisdom of the participants’ experience and allow a balance of silence and sharing, seated meditation and gentle movement, with the aim to help participants discover the many resources within themselves and within the shared intersubjective space. As both Marieke and Martijn emphasise, the MLE Retreat is a beautiful way of connecting with others on the path, across different disciplines, geographies, and generations, and ultimately feeling less alone in one’s life and work.

If you’re curious about attending the MLE Retreat and have not yet applied, the 2024 application period is open through 30th April at midnight CEST. This year’s MLE Retreat, which will focus on “Living in Groundlessness with Responsibility,” will once again be led by Dr Marieke van Vugt and Dr Martijn van Beek.
