We explore how it was for our people to go through statehood, blood quantum, ANCSA, boarding schools, stripping our language and dance away, and all that has done to our mental health. With that, we have a hopeful spin on this narrative and show how resilient our people are.

'Waats'asdiyei (Joe Yates), the owner of Alaskan Films, LLC. He is a Haida from Craig, Alaska. The latest film ‘Waats’asdiyei, produced, directed, and written, ‘Voices of Our Ancestors’ has been accepted in 12 film festivals, winning six awards and one nominee.
Now, ‘Waats’asdiyei is a Writer for the PBS Kid’s show Molly of Denali. In 2022, he was an Emmy Award Nominee for his episode, Uqiquq. He is also an Associate Field Producer and Story Work Producer for the National Geographic show Life Below Zero: First Alaskans.
’Waats’asdiyei is passionate about his culture, and his primary tool to keep his culture alive is through film. He understands the importance of keeping cultures alive as he helps other indigenous tribes.

Director Statement
As an Alaskan Native, I know that whenever our story is told, it's usually said by an outsider. It's an honor to be able to tell our story by Directing to Editing this project. Giving our people accurate representation is my whole mission in filmmaking. This is our side of the story.
