Christmas in Germany is preceded by preparations and starts earlier. Christmas goods can be found in stores as early as the end of October. Advent in Germany is characterized by houses decorated with lights and traditional wreaths with candles. During this period, children receive Advent calendars in the form of houses with 24 windows containing chocolates, but calendars with tea and even perfumes are also available.

Christmas fairs are a favorite of Germans and are also popular with tourists from all over the world. Germany holds around 150 Christmas fairs, which start at the beginning of Advent and end just before or just after Christmas. Strolling between the stalls, you can buy Christmas decorations and sample traditional foods. Mulled wine should be drunk with spices and oranges. It is at the fairs that you can experience the real magic of Christmas in the German version. Christmas fairs are organized in almost every major city. Some of the most interesting ones include: Struckle Fair in Dresden, Baby Jesus Fair in Munich, Leprechaun Fair in the Old Market Square in Cologne, Baby Jesus Fair in Nuremberg, but you can also find them in, for example, Augsburg, Stuttgart, Dortmund.

Since 1996, the tallest Christmas tree in Germany has been erected at the Dortmund fairgrounds. In 2022, the Christmas tree is 45 meters high. It takes about 1 month to install and decorate the Christmas tree. 48,000 lights will shine on the tall Christmas tree.
