The Central Government has revised its policy on the disposal of 60,000 acres of unused salt pan lands across India, paving the way for their transfer to support various national development projects. These lands can now be utilized for purposes such as biodiversity conservation, eco-sensitive projects, renewable energy, affordable housing, and more. This policy change aims to boost initiatives like slum redevelopment and housing for economically weaker sections (EWS).

Under the new policy, the surplus salt land can be leased for 99 years to central government departments, public sector enterprises, state governments, and public enterprises of states. State governments will have the authority to sub-lease these lands specifically for projects related to slum redevelopment, EWS housing, and industrial use. However, the designated land use will remain fixed once the transfer is made, ensuring consistency in project planning.
