If you are looking for a less busy alternative to Kyoto, Takayama should be on your itinerary. The city’s old historical center transports you back to the Edo Period through its beautiful architecture. The city is smaller and cozier than most Japanese cities, with streets filled with souvenir shops, sake shops, and a wide variety of snacks for all tastes.
