Houdini used training methods like jiujitsu, cold exposure, breathwork, knees-over-toes, functional mobility and many others to become the most notorious magician of all time. He was a true physical Renaissance man. Check it out:


Training in jiujitsu, boxing and running as a youth, Houdini used physical fitness throughout his legendary career to build his body to handle the extreme rigors of escape artistry. He even developed many modern health trends such as cold therapy, breathwork, knees-over-toes exercises, standing desks and intentional sunlight exposure. Houdini favored daily calisthenics to build his famous strength, regular stretching to train his frightening mobility and he also had what is possibly the most extensive grip training routine in human history.

In fact, one little secret is that some of his tricks weren’t really stage magic at all, but rather just him utilizing a level of physical strength or mobility that was literally unbelievable.

On health and fitness, he would say:

“The Aborigines … made their cures through nature's remedies: sunlight, air, water and foods in their natural state as God grew them, and I believe those things we must use if we hope to have health, strength, and I might add happiness, for one cannot be happy if he is in ill-health.”
