It was time to get Square Top! Heading back to the same area where I started for Jackson Peak, we began by following an ATV track till we decided on a route up. Our route took us through some fairly thick bush that eventually thinned out and we climbed up a steep/loose ridge to gain access to the summit ridge. Our ascent was right around 2200ft of elevation gain from the truck. A grinder for sure.
On April 11, 1983 a B52 Bomber crashed into the south face of Square Top. The plane was destroyed upon impact, killing all crew. We happened to summit Square Top on April 11, 37 years after the fact. RIP Crew of LURE 75.
We did find quite a bit of wreckage from the crash. We descended the south face under the summit finding larger pieces of wreckage. Sobering moments.
