Lady Murasaki The Storyteller

The theologian Thomas Aquanus called Aristotle simply “ The Philosopher ”. I’d like to follow him and would like to call Lady Murasaki “ The Storyteller ”.

Murasaki Shikibu, the author of The Tale of Genji, lived approximately in the 11th century, and her actual name and date of birth are unknown. According to Murasaki Shikibu's diary, her father wished that if Murasaki Shikibu were a boy, because she learned the Chinese classics faster than her elder brother, who was learning it from their father, a Chinese scholar. She must have been a very clever girl and, above all, she loved stories.

From her diary, we learn that she corresponded with people with whom she had conversations about stories, exchanging her thoughts and opinions and criticisms. It is the same as today's girls exchanging their favorite novels, manga, or “ 推し/Oshi ”or one’s idol, on the Internet or social networking sites.

Murasaki Shikibu served at the court after reaching middle age. In her diary, she criticizes her colleagues, gives advice to her friends, and reflects on her life. When we read how Murasaki Shikibu felt and lived her life, it seems as if there is no such thing as a thousand-year gap in time.

By the way, I personally prefer people who are single-minded about one person for the rest of their lives, like Florentino, the man in Garcia Marquez's “ Love in the Time of Cholera ” for example. That is why I have not yet read the whole story of Genji-no-kimi, who falls in love with several women one after another. I think Junichiro TANIZAKI also said that he did not like men like him, but he still completed at least three modern translations of the Tale of Genji because of its *irresistible charm*....

神学者のトマス・アクィナスは、アリストテレスをただ「哲学者」と呼びました。それに倣って、私も紫式部を「ストーリーテラー」と呼んでみたいと思います。
源氏物語の作者である紫式部は、およそ11世紀に生きた人で、実名も生まれた日も不明です。紫式部の日記によると、漢学者であった父親から漢籍を習っている兄を近くで見ていて、兄より早く覚えたので、父親は紫式部が男の子でないのを残念がったとあります。かなり利発な少女だったのでしょう。そして何と言っても、物語が大好きであったようです。
日記からは、物語について、話の合う人と文通して、思い切り言いたい事、感想や批評を取り交わしていた事が伺えます。現代の少女が、自分の好きな小説やマンガ、あるいは「推しについて、ネット上、SNSでやり取りするのと同じです。
紫式部は中年を過ぎてから、宮廷に出仕しました。日記では同僚を批判したり、友人へアドバイスしたり、人生を振り返ったりしています。式部がどう感じて生きていたかを読むと、まるで千年もの時間の隔たりなどないかのように思われてきます。
ところで、私は個人的に、例えばガルシア・マルケスの『コレラの時代の愛』の男、フロレンティーノのように、生涯一人を一途に想うような人が好みです。そんな訳で、複数の女性と次々に恋愛する源氏の君の話は、まだ全部を読んでいません。谷崎潤一郎も源氏の君のような男は好きではないと言っていた気がしますが、少なくとも3度も現代語訳を書いたのは、ひとえに源氏物語が持つ、抗いがたい魅力によるのでしょう…。
